The Underneath

A boy who is abandoned by his mom; beat up by his dad, and then runs away to live in the swamps of Texas; becomes known as Gar Face and is a fierce hunter.  A calico cat, which is pregnant, is abandoned by the people who she thought loved her. When she hears the sad song of Ranger, an old bloodhound, she knows she must find him and they become friends and a family when her kittens are born. Intertwined is another story, a thousand years earlier, Grandmother Moccasin a shape-shifting snake has a daughter, Night Song, who has a beautiful voice and a hawk, who falls in love with Night Song and both shape-shift to humans, so they can live together. There is sadness, death, and then love and happiness.
